Science

Sunrise Curriculum Intent
Our unique Sunrise curriculum is research informed to build children's interests in powerful knowledge and skills, supported by long term memory pedagogy to create life long aspirations. This is underpinned by the school vision 'You are never too young to make a difference.'

Science Intent

Science teaching at St Mary’s C of E Primary School aims to give all children a lifelong love of science through a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge helping them to think scientifically. The children are exposed to a rich and varied curriculum through a range of exciting and engaging topics which aim to challenge and meet the needs of our children. Scientific enquiry skills are clearly embedded to develop children’s curiosity, encourage them to ask questions about the world around them and to become independent learners in exploring possible answers for their scientific based questions. Children develop a range of scientific vocabulary to help them to effectively communicate their ideas, questions and findings.

Our school vision promotes a safe, caring environment in order to 'change the world where we live'. Our Science curriculum allows children to be inspired by scientists of the past and ask and answer the questions necessary to change the future.

SEND and Science

Science has great potential for pupils with SEND to learn about the world they live in. There are interesting practical activities to be done, presenting opportunities for real discovery and thought-provoking discussion. Carefully organised, the practical work in science can enable pupils to achieve in ways that are less frequently available in other subjects, and make an important contribution to a learner's confidence and self-esteem.

  • A spiral curriculum (revisit and revise) - At the start of the lesson, children will be revisiting the vocabulary and keys facts they have learnt. This will give children with SEN more time and opportunities to understand the concepts and vital knowledge they need to access the learning.
  • A variety of methods for recording ideas quickly is provided to pupils and teachers do not enforce rigid approaches when it comes to recording and communicating design ideas and developments.
  • Visual word maps - Where appropriate we create a visual word mat for your children with SEN. These can be used to pre-teach new vocabulary prior to the lesson, to help children visualise the concepts they are using in class and to help with spelling and writing activities.
Our Science Learning in Action
Here you can see us enjoying hands on experiences through our science learning, learning about the world around us in order to make a difference and change the world where we live.
We have enjoyed learning about how to protect different species, how to look after chicks and how to stay healthy.
