PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Sunrise Curriculum

Our unique Sunrise Curriculum is research informed to build children's interests in powerful knowledge and skills, supported by long-term memory pedagogy to create life long aspirations. This is underpinned by the school vision 'You are never too young to make a difference.'
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
INTENT

Our PE curriculum forms part of St. Mary's Sunrise Curriculum. It is broad and balanced to promote children's physical health and well-being. We want our pupils to experience a wide range of activities that help to develop their health, fitness and well-being. We aim to inspire pupils to participate, compete, succeed and become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in extra-curricular clubs, inter-school events and against other schools builds character and support us in embedding our school values of courage, trust, hope, friendship, compassion and joy.

In addition to Real PE, we teach children how to be healthy, active and safe. In EYFS children are taught how to ride a bike and we offer Level One Bikeability training to year 4 pupils so they can learn to ride a bike safely. We teach swimming in year 3, 4 and 5 in order to meet the requirement of 25m by the end of key stage 2. In addition to this, children in year 5 and 6 learn to surf and are taught basic beach safety.  Children in Year 5 and 6 learn Tag Rugby and are taught by a highly experienced coach from Cornish Pirates RFC. Pupils from year 4 and 6 also enjoy an annual residential where they take part in adventurous activities such as kayaking, climbing and archery. All children have the opportunity to enjoy being physically active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and using the medium of sport- increase their self-esteem. We aspire for children to adopt a positive mindset and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience.

Our school vision is that 'You are never to young to make a difference' and our PE curriculum aims to teach children to be physically active citizens to benefit their long-term health and well-being.

The aims of our PE curriculum are to develop pupils who:
  • have and maintain high levels physical fitness;
  • have a keen interest in PE - a willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extra-curricular sport;
  • lead a healthy lifestyle which is achieved by eating sensibly, being aware of the
    dangers of drugs, smoking and alcohol and exercising regularly;
  • are able to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and have an
    understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-
    being;
  • take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others;
  • practice skills in a range of different activities and situations, alone, in
    small groups and in teams, and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve high levels of performance;
  • employ imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography
  • are able to improve their own and others’ performance;
  • can work independently for extended periods of time
  • can swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and know how to remain safe in and around water
CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION

Children are taught by both teaching staff and qualified sports coaches from EYFS to Y6 including a Cornish Pirates rugby coach, Chance to Shine cricket coach, qualified surf instructors and Swimming Teachers. The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area, afterschool clubs and Outdoor Adventurous Activities for Y4, Y5 and Y6.

A select group of KS2 pupils are also trained Sports Leaders and they assist in the running of clubs. As an active school, we aim to ensure that the children participate in active lessons outside of their regular PE lessons also. This involves incorporating moments within lessons whereby the children can be active and includes regular sessions in forest school too.

At St. Mary's we teach Physical Education using Real PE. It supports every child to develop the physical literacy, knowledge, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, Sport and life. The unique, child centred approach includes, challenge and support for every child.

It is fully aligned to the National Curriculum requirements and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning.
