Sunrise Curriculum Intent
Our unique Sunrise curriculum is research informed to build children's interests in powerful knowledge and skills, supported by long term memory pedagogy to create life long aspirations. This is underpinned by the school vision 'You are never too young to make a difference.'
Music Intent
Our music curriculum forms part of St. Mary’s Sunrise Curriculum. Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. It is our intent that we make music an inspiring and enjoyable learning experience which develops the children’s musical skills, introduces them to the best musicians and encourages them to share their music with our community. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which to develop a love of music and in turn increase their self-confidence, wellbeing, creativity and sense of achievement.
Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat through performing on a range of musical instruments. By singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music across different time periods, cultures and traditions. This supports children to understand the cultural capital of being open minded in their listening as well as knowledgeable about a breadth of musical genres in the world today. The children learn to appreciate how music supports other areas of the curriculum such as dance and drama.
Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and to listen with confidence.
Our school vision is that ‘you are never too young to make a difference’ and our music curriculum aims to prepare children to .
All children can achieve, at their own level in music. Their SEN should not be considered a limiting factor, and all should be encouraged to participate fully.
They should be encouraged to explore how the music of a variety of genres, and from different cultures makes them feel, and express this through the means most suitable to their differing needs. They should be encouraged to make music using tuned and untuned instruments that reflect their understanding and appreciation of a variety of stimuli that are adapted where needed.
What amendments are made to the subject in order to help children with SENs to achieve?
Extra time to repeat listening to stimulus music, to form opinions, to experiment with tuned and untuned instruments
Visual and multisensory prompts for musical terminology, instruments names, composers and other ‘fact’ based learning
fostering a can do attitude, particularly with regards to performance, and support to express how the music makes them feel
A spiral curriculum (revisit and revise) - At the start of the lesson, children will be revisiting the vocabulary and keys facts you have learnt. This will give children with SEN more time and opportunities to understand the concepts and vital knowledge they need to access the learning.
Visual word maps - where appropriate we will create a visual word mat for your children with SEN.
